How to Really Look at a Car

Because buying smart starts with seeing smart — and a little bit of swagger.

Most people think shopping for a car means taking a test drive. But before you turn that key, there’s a better way to get to know what you’re buying: look at it.
Really look at it.
In a focus group, we were once told to "walk the car." That meant to stand at specific spots and evaluate it from every angle. It sounds a little extra, but it’s one of the best tricks we’ve learned for spotting what matters (and what might drive you nuts later). Grab your coffee, take a lap, and use this checklist the next time you’re on the lot. You’ll never look at a car the same way again.
Front: First Impressions Matter
Cars have faces. Stand right in front and take it in. The grille, headlights, and overall stance. Does it look friendly or aggressive? Sleek or bulky? Now crouch slightly and check the visibility from the driver’s seat. Can you see the hood? The road? That’s not just design — it’s safety and comfort. If you really look at it, you'll notice it even has a face.
Tip: Pay attention to headlights. Slim, stylish LEDs might look fierce, but they can mean less nighttime brightness — especially on lower trims.

Front Corner: Find Its “Good Side”
From here, you can see shape and proportion, the angle that reveals whether the car feels compact or clunky. Check how the hood meets the windshield, and how the lines flow. This is also where you’ll notice how the paint reacts to sunlight (yes, that metallic sparkle might be a dust magnet).
Color cue: Dark colors hide dirt but mute the design lines. Light colors highlight curves but show every panel gap. Metallic paints shimmer beautifully but cost more to repair if scratched. Your car’s color sets its whole vibe.

Side: Study the Profile
A side view shows balance — where the doors sit, how high it rides, and how practical it’ll be in daily life.
Check door handles (are they easy to grab?)
Look at wheels and tires. Not just size, but style and material.
Bonus: Run a finger along the rim. Rough spots or chips hint at careless handling — or worse, a lazy detail job

Alloy wheels: lighter, shinier, better performance and resale value.
Painted or blackout wheels: trendy but scuff easily on curbs.

Back Corner: The Real-World View
This is what everyone behind you in traffic will see, so make sure you love it. Look for rear visibility, camera placement, and bumper height. Bonus points for clean LED taillights. They look modern, but check cost if cracked.
Rear: Function Over Flash
Pop the trunk. How heavy is it to lift? Are the hinges in your way? Try a “grocery test” — imagine loading a suitcase or stroller. If it’s awkward, it’ll be worse when it’s raining and you’re juggling bags.
Tip: For SUVs, test the power liftgate twice. Slow sensors are the silent killers of convenience.
Driver’s Seat: Sit at Your Command Center
Now it’s personal. Adjust everything — seat, mirrors, steering. Do you feel confident or cramped? Run your hands along the controls. Some interiors look luxe until you realize every function lives three menus deep. Safety-wise, look for forward-collision alerts, blind-spot warnings, and lane-keep assist. If you’re tech-shy, check whether you can turn them off easily — some systems are more clingy than helpful.

Back seats: Passenger + Back Rows
Hop in the back — you’re buying the whole car, not just the driver’s view. Check legroom, materials, vents, cupholders, and seat angle. Even small comforts make a difference for long trips.
For families: Find the LATCH connectors (the little metal anchors hidden between cushions). They’re where child and booster seats attach. Bonus points if they’re easy to reach, but some SUVs make you go on an archaeological dig.

Cargo: Your Lifestyle Check
Fold those back seats. Do they lay flat? Is the floor even? Now mentally load your life: groceries, suitcases, sports gear, that massive Trader Joe’s haul. Make sure your real-world cargo fits your dream car.
And: If You’re Shopping Electric
You’ll do most of the same walk-around, but add a few EV-specific checks:
Where’s the charging port? (Front vs. rear matters for home setup.)
Is there a tidy spot to store the cord?
Pop the front trunk (frunk) to see if it’s actually useful.
Check the range display with lights, heat, and seat warmers on. (It'll drop.
Ask about charging speed. Level 2 vs. DC fast charging can be the difference between “quick top-up” and “see you in three hours.”

Bonus: Do It Twice
Once in daylight, once at dusk. Shadows and lighting reveal surprises: Paint imperfections, headlines and brake lights, blind spots and glare you’d never notice at noon.
